Potato Printing

Potato Printing

We're exploring the beginning of the Renaissance this week, and how the Gutenberg press changed the world. Jonathan used spring cookie cutters (of bunnies and butterflies) to make potato stamps. He incorporated some things he's learned from some code-breaking books he's been devouring to make some invisible butterfly prints, as well as the acrylic blue bunny prints.

ETA: We also discovered that when a drop of lemon juice drips onto the acrylic blue paint, it disappears! J has decided acids are cool.

ETA2: We also discovered just how important the ink consistency and even pressure can be. It took Gutenberg years of experimentation to find the right inks and metals, etc to get his press right (and the press itself was a converted wine press!)

Cuckoo

We came across this book when we were studying Aztec/Maya/Inca cultures, and Jonathan wanted to make his own Cucu bird. (No matter how many photos I took, his eyes kept blinking, so I gave up!)
